We hope to support these missions by providing a safe space for people to hear and share clear information regarding topics like: \n\nThe roles and responsibilities within various levels of Canadian/local government\nWho to contact regarding what and best practices when doing so\nSuccessful policy reform stories and recommendations to\nPersonal experiences and advice from past and current officials\n\nThese discussions will be held with guests –  current and past elected officials\, government staff\, and community members with relevant experience – on the second Tuesday of each month. \nThese event are community-led and will be non-partisan\, free with registration and open to the public. \nJANUARY GUEST\nWe are happy to welcome Mark Strahl\, current Member of Parliament for Chilliwack-Hope to this month’s Civil Night! \nIn 2011\, Mark first ran as a candidate in the riding of Chilliwack—Fraser Canyon and was elected to the House of Commons\, where he served in a number of key roles in Stephen Harper’s Conservative government\, including B.C. Caucus Chair and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. DESCRIPTION:ABOUT\nCivil Nights at The Grand Hall is a monthly discussion that aims to increase civic engagement between elections\, and support a social form of political education within the general public. We hope to support these missions by providing a safe space for people to hear and share clear information regarding topics like: \n\nThe roles and responsibilities within various levels of Canadian/local government\nWho to contact regarding what and best practices when doing so\nSuccessful policy reform stories and recommendations to\nPersonal experiences and advice from past and current officials\n\nThese discussions will be held with guests –  current and past elected officials\, government staff\, and community members with relevant experience – on the second Tuesday of each month. \nThese event are community-led and will be non-partisan\, free with registration and open to the public. \nJANUARY GUEST\nWe are happy to welcome Nicole Read\, current City Councillor for the City of Chilliwack to this month’s Civil Night! \nCouncillor Nicole Read has been serving the Chilliwack community as Councillor on Chilliwack City Council since November 2022. Councillor Read was raised on a dairy farm in Chilliwack and was a part of her parents’ family-owned retail dairy store since she was seven years old. At 22 she managed her family’s retail sports store and at 25\, she started her first business in the hospitality industry doing sales and marketing for hotels in different markets throughout BC and Alberta. Other entrepreneurial adventures included contract work for employment programs\, online vacation home rentals\, restaurant owner of an upper casual steakhouse\, and a temporary to permanent employment staffing agency\, before working for Community Futures South Fraser. Councillor Read is deeply rooted to the Rotary Club of Chilliwack\, allowing her to give back to the community that has given her so many opportunities. She represents her community as a member of the: \n\nAffordable Housing and Development Advisory Committee (Vice Chair)\nChilliwack Arts and Cultural Society Board (Liaison)\nChilliwack Economic Partners Corporation (Liaison)\nChilliwack Healthier Community (Alternate)\nFraser Valley Regional District Board\nFraser Valley Regional Hospital Board\n\nPROGRAM\n\n6:00PM – Doors Open\n6:20PM – Program Starts\n7:30PM – Open discussion/mingle\n\nNo alcohol is permitted on premise during this event.
